What kind of equipment you will take with you is of your choice. This theme is too wide to discuss here, but generally we can say that every particle of equipment should have a swap. So, two cameras, two chargers, two memory cards, only tripod probably cant get damaged so one is enough.
The storage device is very important. Now, only x-Drive, portable burner-reader or even notebook are applicable devices. They are very expensive, but small. That is what you really need. When you make your choice think that you will need more place and time as money on your way. Extreme travelers use mostly burner-reader and burn two disks per one pack of pictures. This is most secure variant but will spit out a lot of discs and use lot of place in your rucksack.
Maybe you will carry lot of lenses, depends of your needs. A common travel lens will be 28-80 mm. Think about focal length multiplier. You'll need mostly wide angle lenses and macro in some cases.
In other case, it is good idea to have 100-300 mm lens but in this case you'll need a tripod.
When climbing on rocks the lens will become the bumper of your camera. Use the lens-cap. Ultraviolet filter will parry a blow so I have them both always attached on my lens. The dust on filter plane clean with soft brush. When use protecting cream for your skin, take care where you put fatty fingers. When changing the parts, be careful not to lose the card, batteries or lens-cap. While walking around, you can incidentally step on fallen equipment.
More perfectly you are prepared to travel the less troubles you can expect on terrain. But you have already knew that. More important as to be supplied with all indispensable tools is to have as less as possible load with you. Still the first rule is to have all necessary equipment you cant buy abroad with you. In highlands there will be no tobacco shops with common batteries. If you carry no enough shirts, you can still wash few ones, you can wear one trousers a week, but if your unique camera goes to hell you can almost go home.
Instead of taking enormous big bag of clothes, carefully fill a small photo-backpack with all necessary equipment. My rule is to prepare all stuff together, then reject a half, mostly clothes. Then put all stuff in half smaller bag as you thought you will need.
Make a list and check the package. All photographic equipment should go into small 25x30 cm backpack which should always be with you. Beside photo-equipment, don't forget to take remedies, plasters, pocket knife, a needle, tweezers etc. Check again if you took all of cables. This small knapsack should be as you shadow. The bag with your clothes can be lost after first flight, but you can buy new clothes for small money everywhere. However, you wont find a special charger for your camera in a desert.
